26 Jul Updated Version of the Form I-9 – Revised on 7/17/17!
This is important information for any business with employees!
On July 17, 2017, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) released a new version of and instructions for Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. By September 18, 2017, employers must use only the new version.
I-9 audits are a common occurrence and something we at CYB do on a regular basis. As an employer, you are most likely already aware of the need for the completion of I-9 forms throughout your company. If you are not aware, you may have just started your business, or just begun hiring, the I-9 form is the form that is used for verifying the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired for employment in the United States.
As stated on uscis.gov, “All U.S. employers must ensure proper completion of Form I-9 for EVERY individual they hire for employment in the United States. Both employees and employers (or authorized representatives of the employer) must complete the form.
On the form, an employee must attest to his or her employment authorization. The employee must also present his or her employer with acceptable documents evidencing identity and employment authorization. The employer must examine the employment eligibility and identity document(s) an employee presents to determine whether the document(s) reasonably appear to be genuine and to relate to the employee and record the document information on the Form I-9.
The list of acceptable documents can be found on the last page of the form. Employers must retain Form I-9 for a designated period and make it available for inspection by authorized government officers.”
