Illinois Updates Military Leave Law

by | Aug 7, 2025

Illinois employers with 51 or more employees are now required to provide paid leave to employees who participate in a military funeral honors detail. Employees can take up to eight hours per month—but not more than 40 hours per calendar year—to participate in these funeral activities and can’t be required to use other forms of leave like PTO. Employees eligible for this leave include current and retired servicemembers and those who typically participate in a military funeral honors detail, such as members of veterans service organizations.

Action Item
Update your military leave policy to include this leave entitlement. If you use our Smart Employee Handbook, accept the update when you receive it.
